MATH 304 - Linear Algebra

TEXTBOOK: see current textbook list

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: See catalog description here

This course is for engineering majors, computer science majors, and mathematics education majors. Therefore, emphasis should be on applications and problem solving.

The student should be able to do simple proofs (examples: verify that a given set is or is not a subspace or a that a given map is or is not a linear transformation; show that the intersection of two subspaces is a subspace). Determinants may be taught computationally, skipping the general definition and adjoints.

Note: This is a fall or spring schedule. In summer, this schedule is accelerated by a factor of 3 in order to accommodate a 5-week session.

The following sections should be covered:

1 MATRICES AND SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS (Material will be covered in 2 weeks)
Sections 1.1-1.5
2 DETERMINANTS (Material will be covered in 1 week)
Sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 (if time permits)
3 VECTOR SPACES (Material will be covered in 3 weeks)
Sections 3.1-3.6
4 LINEAR TRANSFORMATIONS (Material will be covered in 1.5 weeks)
Sections 4.1-4.3
5 ORTHOGONALITY (Material will be covered in 3 weeks)
Sections 5.1-5.6
6 EIGENVALUES (Materill will be covered in 1.5 weeks)
Sections 6.1-6.3
MATLAB exercises are at the discretion of the instructor. Most students have not seen MATLAB in a prior course.
